Intresting stuff here: To: namisa Subject: Re: [MisaMalawi] The K50,000 booklet On Mon, Nov 24, 2014 6:11 PM EET acmunthali@gmail wrote: This is an issue that affects the media broadly and as far as Im concerned, no-one has raised this issue on this forum and I only became aware about the K50,000 booklet after Grecian Tukula raised it in his column yesterday. And GT was seeking suggestions about what to do with it. Part of the reason for posting it here was not to disgrace others who pocketed the K50,000 and kept their counsel; it was intended to assist GT come up with a decision - in a way. By the way, your concerns should have been a) Why did no-one write anything immediately after the presidential-do? b) How does the Media Council of Malawi classify the K50,000? An allowance? If so, for what? Was it a gift? A bribe? Did exco members of MCM also receive K50,000 each? For what? Was it ethical? (C) I take it that most of the people who attended the presidential-do are media managers...Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone • Bright Sonani: Good people something is missing in all this. I saw some Media Council gurus there and I am just interested to know if any of them got the white or are you saying grey or brown envelopes and what did they do after realising that there was nothing closer to what they anticipated in the envelopes but some K500 notes. Just thinking Tuntufye Yamikani Simutowe: even Vales Machila and Wise Chijere Chirwa, eni Media Council of Malawi, analandiranawo makobidi, ndipo sindinave kuti akabweza! enanu ndemukuti chani? ana aNjoka, mukhale chete! K Iron Msiska: People have been judging contributions here and I wish to give my own. This is a debate filled with hypocrisy. How? Most contributions are mentioning a candidate in their contributions. 1. How is this issue connected to the candidates? 2. Some are saying some candidate returned the money to State House. Under which circumstances did that money get returned? Is it out of will or because this issue was raised in a column by Gracian Tukula? If it was out of will, why wasnt this noble gesture made public before Gracian raised the issue in the column? 3. And now to those of you making noise now when you know the money was eceived some good few days ago. Why are you making the noise now? Why is the issue the money when (as per the paragraph Chachacha lifted from Gracians contribution) what appears to be an issue is the manner in which Minister of Information communicated the contents of the envelope or whatever it is? As many have already said, we ought not to be hypocritical here. Some of us here know that we have had our hands oiled with more than K50,000 and those people did not make a fuss out of it here.Easy advice: Eat the money but stand by your professionalism. Ngati simukudzifuna ndikhoza kukupasana account number yanga muike kumeneko. George Kasakula: Karen, If by candidate, you mean me, I returned the money on night of Tuesday last week at Sanjika Palace soon after I was given. You can check this with anybody you would care to.Thanks very much and a great evening to everybody. fjomo@yahoo via NAMISA: Kodi Ralph Tenthani sanabwenze nawo simeon shumba via NAMISA: What I see here is hypocrisy among us the Journalists.Kodi enanu you are busy writing, without mentioning names mukati nditchule maina am ready to do that, mwadya ndalama zingati za anthu andalewa? Mkoko Mlauzi via NAMISA: Hahaha Shumba tsopano! And they were given the money in dollars! Ethics my foot, not in malawi,I have bills to take care of Vitus-Gregory Gondwe; Perhaps it’s in human nature to love to smell so nice when it comes to issues of integrity and moral temperance. But I really take offence when others come here yavi- yavi trying to condemn all that went to Sanjika and pocketed the money and failed to make it a business of those willing to know that they were ‘bribed’. I see hypocrisy written all over this school of thought for a simple reason that ‘those that come into equity must come with clean hands’. I would really love to know if the consternation is coming out of goodwill for the betterment of the profession or for the mere reason to score some cheap points for some ulterior motives while focusing of what might or might not be in posterity. What’s the crime? That those that went there pocketed the money and were tight lipped and therefore did a disservice to the profession. Or is it because Nankhumwa told us one thing and ended giving us another? But if perhaps the reasoning would be that, well, the Presidency ‘bribed’ us, to hush us - as Ralph Ten would testify when a State House geek approached him when he was busy trying to staff the envelope with the ‘cursed’ K500 notes into his smaller pocket, “that now you have our money stop writing bad about our president” to which Ralph Ten retorted: “No way! I won’t stop. In fact this is my tax” - Then I would really buy into what Mr. Chachacha is trying to do by discrediting all of us who did not emulate Kasakula and Tukula to either refuse or return the booty. But my misgivings are that let’s not pretend to be holier than though because our current position did not opportune us to access the Sanjika bribes. And do you really believe in your hearts that the money achieved its ‘bribery’ intended purpose? For me I feel the money was even little because I had to drive from Lilongwe to Blantyre where I spent a night for something that was not of my business. The presidency invited me so it had to foot my bills, bribery or no bribery. And I owe no one any apologies. And believe you me, this cannot change anything ‘dissent’ (sic) that I write about government and don’t even be cheated that the even that mere gesture will. No! But like I said I don’t tolerate hypocrisy and hypocrites. Pilirani Phiri Thats not the meaning of cheque book journalism, Beki. But the other way round. vitusgregorygondwe@ gmail: Please stop the hypocrisy... some of our dealings are well documented. Ephraim Nyondo wrote: Selected journalists, across the country, went to a dinner thrown by a president. After the dinner they get K50000. There is no evidence that the money was given to influence positivity in reporting. In fact, most Sunday columns remained critical as usual. Why the fuss? rebecca chimjeka: Journalists shake hands with Obama why not Muthalika, oti anachita kutiyitana, enanu, muferamo not even a handshake with him. Sam Phiri: Ine ku Statehouse ndinapita ndipo ndalama ndinalandira. Nde mwati ethics? Amene sanalandilepo apa za mabungwe, kaya wa ndale andigende ndi mwala.
