Intrigued by the comments of my Aussie friend Leigh Blaikie who was driven to heights of almost incoherent indignation by the Australian version of MKR, Patrick and I started watching it this week only to be struck by the fact that none of the first five contestants we have seen (the second group of five) can actually cook. At all. Anything. Todays menu was a seafood starter that went wrong, a rabbit stew that went wrong (how can a rabbit stew go wrong - apart from the fact it is made of rabbit naturally) and a poached pear with ice-cream which they managed to get out. It is only ten portions, and it took them six hours from when their guests had sat down until they served the pud. On top of the three hours they had had earlier...What CAN these people possible be doing (1) in their kitchens and (2) on TV...Incidentally the pud was greeted with the sort of joy usually reserved for meeting ones firstborn - but peeling and poaching ten pears is scarcely a work of genius - and they didnt even bother to take out the core...I am not sure whether my expectations of a cookery competition are unreasonably high, or life in the former colonies is still a great deal harder than I realised...although everyone is dressed up like an extra from Dallas....As Alice might have said had she seen it, curiouser and curiouser...
