Introducing Nutrigenius sponsored athlete Sophia, Most of you know she can lift, but not all of you know how all this started. So this is her story... Sophia was always leading a healthy and active lifestyle. In her teenage years she was competing in track and field (100m, 200m, 400m, triple jump and long jump), netball and soccer. After she moved to Sydney she joined the gym but was only doing Body Attack classes. She had never touched weights before the year 2012. In February of that year, Sophia had a surgery to remove an abscess in the left groin. About 80g of puss (size of a small tub of yogurt) were removed leaving a big open wound in her groin, that according to her surgeon would take roughly a couple of months to heal. It was that time that I introduced Sophia to squatting (bodyweight squats). My thought was that mobilising the area, would increase the healing rate of the wound, by facilitating protein-turnover as well as breaking down scar-tissue faster to replace it with muscular one. Indeed it worked! Her wound healed within a month, leaving the surgeon speechless for how quickly the wound closed. Not only that, but in the process we moved from bodyweight squatting to doing some light weights. Sophia got addicted to it, and thus she wanted to start training for strength. It didnt take a long time to realise her potential. Within less than a year Sophia set the IPF 52kg Australian Squat Record, squatting 121.5kg at the Adonis Athletics June 2013 meet. Ever since she has never stepped into a class again in the gym, and loves her weights routine. What does her routine entail? Have a look: https://youtube/watch?v=QrpnyEs6c4g
