Saidy Janko Name Saidy Janko Age 19 Born Zurich Position Defender Profile Janko signed on deadline day last year for an undisclosed fee from FC Zurich after impressing in the FIFA Blue Stars tournament in his home city. The right-back made an instant impression during a trial spell, showing excellent strength and acceleration. Once international clearance was received, he swiftly made appearances at three different age levels – Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21. The Switzerland U19 international grew up admiring strikers such as Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba but admits he has never fancied playing in attack. Season The fact that he has made the shortlist for the Denzil Haroun Trophy (the Reserves Player of the Year), despite still being eligible for Paul McGuinness Academy team, speaks volumes about his contribution. Warren Joyce prefers to use Janko as a right-sided midfielder and he has managed to secure a regular place in the side. The teenager seemed at home on the European stage in the UEFA Youth League and his power at Academy level was very apparent, even if he was unable to prevent a disappointing FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of Huddersfield Town. Style It is difficult not to notice similarities with Antonio Valencia in the way he patrols the flank, and although Janko prefers playing in defence, his direct approach causes opposing full-backs problems by having an unsettling effect through his direct speed and power. He is often heavily involved in matches, and by drilling his crosses he creates danger but the fact is he is still working on his end product and developing his all-round game. Not many people are capable of knocking him off the ball and retaining possession is one of his strengths, while his running power marks him out as a real crowd-pleaser.
