Introducing one of our HCP participants Sabrina Meyns and her beautiful work. Sabrina is based near Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim.Sabrina creates delicate and intricate jewellery and sculptural objects using handmade paper and precious metals. Her designs are based on innovative combinations of these two very different materials, aiming to dissolve the boundaries between them. Meyns draws her inspiration from the garden. She is fascinated by the delicate structural engineering of plants, and makes close studies of their component parts: seeds, stamen, petals, leaves and stems. She responds particularly to late summer and autumn, especially struck by plants and flowers approaching the end of their life cycle – becoming fragile and translucent, and evolving into ghostly shadows of their former selves. Meyns carefully chooses her materials to reflect this tension between beauty and ephemerality in nature. Her aim is to create tangible expressions of intangible beauty for the wearer and viewer. Meyns studied Craft Design (Metals) and History of Art and Design, at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. She graduated with a BA in 2008, and co-founded the Workhouse Studios at Kilmacthomas in Waterford shortly afterwards.
