Introducing the Smoke & Mirrors Ensemble. Founded in the fall of 2009, the name “Smoke and Mirrors” comes from a phrase that the young ensembles mentor, Jack van Geem, principal percussion of the San Francisco Symphony, used to describe the SMEs ability to use the simple tools of rhythm, pitch, and timbre in a complex manner to create powerful musical experiences. At the center of SMEs repertoire stands the work of the 20th century American pioneers of percussion music: John Cage, Lou Harrison, and Steve Reich, as well as newly commissioned and collaborative works with composers who are just beginning their careers. For their second album, Vanish, they worked with Argentinian composer Diego Schissi Oficial on the premiere recording of his engaging Juego de Relojes (Game of Clocks). On December 4, 2011 SME performed Toru Takemitsu’s masterpiece for percussion quintet and orchestra, From Me Flows What You Call Time, with The The Colburn School Orchestra and Gerard Schwarz - the centerpiece of their new album. Recent appearances have included performances with The Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, Trudl Zipper Dance Studio, the Colburn Contemporary Players, and the New West Symphony. In addition to their active schedules in the new music community, Smoke & Mirrors Ensemble is deeply committed to sharing live music as an essential part of building healthy communities. Through the Street Symphony in Los Angeles we performed for inmates at the Los Angeles County Jail and Wayside Correctional Facility in Santa Clarita. As supporters of music education, they have developed outreach programs for children from elementary school through high school. What truly sets Smoke & Mirrors apart is their ability to remind us all of the sheer joy of banging on pots and pans as children, and inviting all of us to share in the making of art. Recommended for those percussion aficionados out there and for those who like rhythmic tonal music that speaks to us today. - Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review We invite you to explore the artistry of this exciting, young ensemble with a sample from their latest album, Vanish. https://youtube/watch?v=emqxOvFYAaU
