Introduction During the past 5 years, since the beginning of the current economic cycle, many things have been put to question. There is so much talk about crisis, analysis of what happened leading up to the events of the end of 2008, where have we gone from there and what should we be doing now, yet nothing has really changed. Our institutions are run in the same way, by the same people, and our day-to-day behaviour is not really any different. How can we create a positive change? Where will this change come from? Grassroots initiatives abound, many with great success, supported by passionate people, taking advantage of the possibilities of technology and leading to real change. But we need more. The public sector is struggling just to survive and provide the basics with austerity measures, financial crises, mistrust from the public and institutional paralysis everywhere. Our political class is not up to the task, and people are no longer expecting positive leadership from them. In today’s economic system the central role is held by business in the form of companies, large and small. This is where change must start and be led. Companies must take the role of social agent, in a progressive way creating profound, positive and far-reaching change. The good news, and the reason for my optimism, is that many companies are already stepping up to this challenge. They see and do things differently and better. And that people are expecting this from them and willing to reward companies that take this role by buying their products and services. They also punish those who do not. I call this change Evolved Business, because I believe that it is a logical progression of decades, centuries even, of development of our economic system. This next step will bring us from a shareholder-focused system of financial capitalism. To a stakeholder-focused system of capitalism that includes other forms of capital: social, environmental, and human as well as financial. All of this is supported by a technology boom of all sorts leading to an explosion of interactions and possibilities. People can and do take control: connecting, informing, producing and demanding. The purpose of this blog is to participate in this movement led by many others, to observe, to discuss and to advocate. I look forward to the discussion.
