Introduction: I will post one of the contains of my Book of Failure. Which I made as one of our requirements before our semester ends in one of my major subject in Developmental Reading 1. It consists of 6 parts: sayings, maxims, epigrams, poems, essays and short stories and it’s all about failures. I want to share with you folks a short story. I am the author of it. It is a true to life story. Before I write it, I asked permission to the man who is involved in my short story, and he is willing to share it with us. His objective of sharing it, we will learn moral values about his life. This short story is all about the experienced of a man’s failure in some point of his life. A man that I have known personally. I choose to write his failure in life to serve as an inspiration, and for those people who want to read about his failure in life, also for those who have known this man personally, you can relate it as well. Warning: Please read it slowly, to understand the story well. Caution: I know my grammar is not good enough, and I welcomed and appreciate any comments and suggestions. I don’t mind if it’s good or bad. I will take it as a constructive criticism, ‘coz all I want is to improve and developed my skills in writing. My critics are not a perfect one. Although I trusted them enough. More critics are much better than a good one. I hoped you like it. ENJOY READING!!! A Man’s Failure This man had begun his experienced and his failure when he finished his College at Urdaneta City University (UCU) with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), 6 years ago. On April 2007, after his graduation and for almost 2 months of reviewing and preparation, he took his board exam for June 2007, for Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE). Unfortunately, he failed his first try. However, he never gives up, he tried again his luck, and for the second time around he take the December 2007 board exam, but again he failed it. Because of his strong determination to pass the board exam, again he never gives up nor surrenders. Because his motto in life “Winners never quits, Quitters never wins”. His goal in life, if he passed his board exam is to give his family a good fortune and a bright future. Therefore, he attempt again the June 2008 board exam, and for the third time still his unlucky to pass it. Then he tried again the December 2008 board exam, but unluckily he failed it again. The fourth time he failed to passed the board exam, he almost give up and he becomes depressed and experienced mild anxiety, but with his strong will and determination he stood up after several weeks of being self pity to himself. On January 2009, his cousin visit their house along with her husband who is a seafarer, and maybe if it’s called coincidence, because it is very timely when they visit, he is planning to try again the June 2009 board exam. And they tried to convince him to try his luck as a seafarer instead of focusing for the board exam. They discourage him for his plan, for maybe it is not his destine to become a Nurse, and told him that being a seafarer is a good one rather than being a Nurse. Therefore, they convince him and he hoped, he looked for another option. And he went to Far East Maritime School in Manila for several months of trainings and seminars. On December 2009, because of his cousin’s husband back up him. He went on board, his first ship for International named M/V Al–Sad a ship tanker route Europe to USA. His contract as a seafarer is 6 months, but after 3 months on board, he got sick after they went to Texas, USA for 1 month. While they are sailing going back to Qatar for their fuel reloading, his condition got worse for almost 1 month of sailing. Their first country to pass by for their refueling is in Spain, they stayed for one week. And immediately he seek a medical attention, but his condition got worse, he suffer from pain on his lower extremities both left and right, he couldn’t walked anymore without assistance, and on his skin some rashes which is red patches appears and which make them bumps. So their Captain decided to send him back to the Philippines for further medical attention, and before he returned, he stayed first in Egypt for 3 weeks for medical treatment. He could not walk anymore because of extreme pain on his lower extremities. On April 2010, finally, he got home and immediately he got a medical treatment at Manila Doctor’s Hospital, shouldered and paid by his Shipping Company. The Doctor attended him; diagnose his condition as Erythema Nodosum a disease, which is Vasculitis, an inflammation of the vessel, particularly the arteries and the capillaries. After he came back and done his treatment and rest for 6 months from his illness, although his condition is not yet stable, he pursued and tried again to take the Dec. 2010 board exam. But then again he failed it to pass. The fifth time he failed he’s not affected and he doesn’t care anymore. Because according to him at least he does his best to give it all for himself and for his family and trying them to give a good life. He said no one is to be blamed to all his failure only the circumstances on his life. For maybe, his luck is not favor to him all the way. Since 2010 up to present, he is still on a medical treatment and followed his check up for every month as out of patient in Sacred Heart Hospital. He claimed himself as a failure, but he accept the fact that God has it purpose why it happen this to him. I admire his courage and for being optimistic for what he had been through. Because he never give up and still stood up for the better and for the best. He was hoping that he would overcome all his trials and obstacles in life as sooner as possible. Now he stayed at home with his family, although he is strict and disciplinarian, and despite of his condition and illness he never fails to be a good husband, good provider and a loving father to his family. He became a friend, mentor, counselor to his one and only loving and kind daughter. He has a good wife who is loving, caring, understanding and kind that always support him in all many ways. His failure makes him stronger and more have faith in God. This man named Jose Sim Sabangan, and I am proud to tell to the whole world he is a father of mine. I salute him despite all his challenges in life, he never gives up. He supported me in every aspect of my life; he gave me a comfortable life even though we are in financial crisis. Along with my mother, they continued sending me to school, to pursue my studies and finished it. They don’t want me to stop, because according to them “Education” is the best thing they can offer to me. Thank you Papa, for not giving up, you still stood up for the best. I am very proud of you forever. I salute your courage and for being optimistic to win your battle which you have been experienced over the years. I LOVE YOU PAPA & MAMA I am grateful and always be very proud to both of you. P.S My objective why I shared my father’s story is not to earned sympathy and pity for him. But to understand him as well. Because sometimes he is impatience, irritable and hot tempered because of his condition and sometimes people misunderstood him, especially those who have not known him personally, what he had been through. And for the general public knowledge, throughout the years up to this date everyday is a battle for him because of his illness. Moral Values: Don’t look at your failure as if it’s the end of the world for you, there’s always hoped as long as you lived. Just called up above to God. And don’t ever give up whatever hardship you encountered. In short, just wait and hope. Acknowledgement & Apology To my Parents who has been my critics in making this endeavor possible. And the credit belongs to them; they helped me in writing this short story. To those who gave their comfort, played a big role, and lend their helping hands to my father’s condition. Also to all his support system who gave their moral, emotional, spiritual support. I will not mention your names anymore but you know already who you are. Saying Thank You is not enough but this is the only word I know to express my deepest and sincere gratitude to all of you. And I will take this opportunity to apologize in behalf of my father’s shortcoming, to those who have been hurt in one way to another, caused by my father for sometimes being straightforward and rude to his words that could hurt others. My sincere apology to all. And from the bottom of my heart Thank You & I Love You All!!! To God be the glory Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Thank you for your time in reading this short story. Quennie Bascos Sabangan BEEd 3
