Introduction to Agri-Value Chain Financing and Risks • Soft Commodity Futures, Weather Derivatives, and Catastrophic Bonds Tuesday | October 14, 2014 | WSDC, 2nd Floor, SGV Building I | 1:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. As the ASEAN Economic Community is closing in, different facets for priority integration sectors are in dire need of pump-priming to be competitive with the steadily opening up of the ASEAN market – particularly agriculture. This introductory course opens up possible ventures to support the agricultural sector in enabling the development of its absorptive capacity, maximizing its market potential by understanding value chains and its overall macro and microeconomic participation, and clarifying information asymmetry. In this workshop, we will help the participants think through the following questions: • What is a Global Value Chain and how has it shaped business strategies across the region? • What are the implications of the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 in the Philippine industries and what are the strategic options available for Philippine industry players? • What is an agri-value chain and how can it be maximized both from the perspective of the value chain participant and the financial sector? What is its practical implication on the Bank’s credit assessment and operating models? • How does agricultural value chain financing affect inclusion, especially for small producers and what can be done to make these systems more inclusive? • What are commodity exchanges and what strategic value can they offer to industry players? How do soft commodity futures function and what are the pricing considerations? • What are weather derivatives and catastrophe bonds and how can they help manage risk exposures relating to extreme events? This workshop aims to reinforce the understanding of value chains in agriculture and its potential as a market to be optimized. It will also serve as a venue for both the supply (financial institutions) and demand (the participants in the agriculture value chain) to bridge information asymmetry and understand their overall participation as the Philippines prepare for the ASEAN Economic Community. To ground the discussion, the case studies will focus on sugar and coconut. Course Outline: I. Introduction to global value chains A. Global supply chain and global value chain B.
