Introduction to Playback Theatre - Sunday April 6th - TopicsExpress

Introduction to Playback Theatre - Sunday April 6th 10-4. Followed by Perth Playback Theatre Company performance - 4.30-5.15 WHY DO I LOVE PLAYBACK THEATRE - by Chloe King, Director PPTCo Underlying everything that has brought me to theatre, film, singing and writing is the element of story. Stories of the experiences we carry around with us, that make us who we are, that shape our character and our nature, that cause reactions in us, whether good or bad. Experiences where we interact with either our selves, or those around us, whether they be family, friends, colleagues, strangers, or with landscapes, with pets, with work, with art, with addictions, with joys, with sorrows, with challenge or success. Playback Theatre explores all of these stories, connecting my story to yours, connecting us all through empathy, understanding and acceptance. My story can be a moment, something small that just happened, of little consequence in the grand scheme of things, or my story can be deep, overwhelming, critical, a conflict or a crisis. I can explore my own understanding of what happened, through Playback. And I can explore your story in equal depth as it plays out in front of my eyes. Being an observer of your story can shape my understanding of the world, perhaps solving a dilemma of my own, or clarifying, deepening or contradicting a perspective I thought I held. DOING Playback brings me a deep and profound joy, both as an artist and as a human being. As an artist I get to truly play; with words, with voice, with body, with sound, with music, and most of all with my my team, my playmates. Our props are a rainbow of coloured fabrics and some simple boxes that can become anything we want them to be. Just like a child I can turn my world upside down, see things with fresh eyes, find the poetry hidden in everyday objects. I can make worlds, landscapes, emotions, thoughts, objects, people, animals, trees, skyscrapers. The only limit is my imagination. I am simultaneously actor, writer, director, composer, poet, costumier, set designer, choreographer - and I am never alone in this amazing experience. Every theatrical offer I make is picked up by my Playback playmates and expanded, and reciprocated with even more offers for me to join in with. For every creative who has ever worked on a great team, what more can you ask for? But more importantly, as a human being, Playback is a gift that I both give and receive. It is a gift to give you your story back for you to watch again, and for you to share with the others present. I am humbled by the experiences shared with us, by being witness to the inner core of other peoples journey. And because I know that you also give that story to us as a precious gift, that you are trusting us with a fragment of your life, I listen with every fibre of my being. I listen with my ears, with my eyes, with my body, with my soul, with my intuition and my higher self and I try to honour every emotion that you passed through on the path you trod. I receive the gift that you share, and I give it back to you to share with the others in the room. In this life, we are not always truly heard, truly seen, truly understood. We can tell people what happened - but they may not truly get it. Playback is a way to help people get it, not on a dry intellectual level but on a heart level. As I witness the connections made in peoples minds and hearts, I again receive the gift of Playback.
