Int’l film awardees to hold ‘intelligent film viewing’ workshop to Filipino teachers in Iloilo, Guimaras TWO INTERNATIONALLY-acclaimed independent film makers are to personally facilitate a seminar-workshop on “Intelligent Film Viewing” on Saturday, August 16, in Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, with select high school Filipino teachers from Iloilo and Guimaras. This partly-subsidized event is initiated by Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS High School through its president Fr. Joseph Y. Haw, SJ, himself a former Filipino teacher. It is in line with the celebration of the Buwan ng Wika with the theme: “Filipino: Wika ng Pagkakaisa”. The “Matalinong Panonood ng Pelikula” seminar-workshop aims to respond to the need of teachers to familiarize themselves with “critical film viewing”—the latest basic skill required in the K-12 curriculum; equip teachers with experiences and approaches necessary to enhance the probing and critical thinking skills of the students through viewing independent (indie) films; and improve the capacity of teachers in relating social issues to students’ lives through movie reviews. This Department of Education-endorsed affair brings two multi-award winning film makers, namely: film producer Alember Ang and film director Rommel Tolentino. Ang’s top creations include “Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe” (The Rapture of Fe; 33rd Cairo International Film Festival Golden Prize Award; 5th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival Special Jury Prize) and “Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” (The Dance of Two Left Feet; Urian Awards Best Picture). An alumnus of two Jesuit institutions Xavier School and Ateneo de Manila University, Ang is also a former teacher and subject area coordinator in Filipino of Xavier School for 10 years. Tolentino, on the other hand, is the maker of Nono, a story of and 8-year-old kid with a cleft palate who wants to join a declamation contest. This film participated in the Berlim Film Festival and in the Asian Cinema Showcase in South Korea. It won the Special Jury Prize in the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in Manila, while Tolentino is the first Filipino filmmaker who has won the prestigious Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France. To note, the program will start with the lecture-discussion of Tolentino on “The role of film in social awareness and transformation,” followed by Ang whose talk will center on “Eliciting critical thinking through film viewing.” Plenary panel discussion will be next, which will then be followed by the concurrent sessions where each level group shall have separate sessions that cover film viewing, Q and A’s, workshop, and reporting. Participants to this training are public and private high school Filipino teachers in Iloilo and Guimaras. Schools are only limited to at most one Filipino teacher in Grade 7 or 8, and one Filipino teacher in Grade 9 or 10 (Fourth Year). As an outreach program of Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS, the seminar-workshop the participating Filipino teachers will only be paying for their registration fee of PhP250.00 for their own lunch, snacks, kits, certificates, and other related materials. The speaker’s professional fee (including board, lodging, and transportation), film rights, venue, networking, and technical expenses will all be shouldered by the sponsoring school. The day before the workshop, Ang and Tolentino will be engaging with high students from Ateneo de Iloilo in a two-part independent film showing in SM City Iloilo Thursday , August 15. Here, their films shall be shown to students as part of an academic exercise which will be highlighted by a panel discussion and open forum.
