Invasive Threat Thursday: Customs and border patrol inspections of incoming cargo and shipments are the front lines of invasive species prevention. Many of the most aggressive invasive species have entered the US either accidentally (escaped from gardens and domestication, attached to boats or cars, or hidden away in wood and plant-based packing materials) or on purpose (for gardening, pets, or other reasons). Finding these newcomers at the door and stopping them from ever gaining a foothold in the US is the first step of prevention (and the cheapest compared to attempting to remove a species once its here).
