Invasive species of toad in Madagascar Scientists warn of an invasion of Asian common toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) in Madagascar which are beginning to threaten the island’s unique species of fauna. These alien species were first spotted in Taomasina, Madagascar’s main port on the east coast, in March and they are thought to have been transported from south east Asia in shipping containers. Scientists are worried partly because these Asian species are related to the cane toad which was deliberately introduced to Australia in the 1930s and proceeded to cause havoc by killing native species. Especially considering the unique native species found in Madagascar, this could be a cause for concern. Killings of an endemic species of snake, the ground boa (Acrantophis spp.), have been observed as they have eaten and become poisoned by the toad. Although the toads are not yet widespread, they are already being collected and removed. Researchers are even calling for the drainage of ponds to prevent their breeding.
