Inventions, Contraptions and Gadgets: A Fifth Grade-Kindergarten Buddy Project, 2013-14 Lita Remsen, Teacher Aide at South Hill, received an IPEI Red and Gold Grant to create a special experience for Fifth Grade-Kindergarten Buddy Project called Invention, Contraptions and Gadgets. She expressed that “Fifth graders will tinker and explore with recycled materials, household items, small project motors and batteries. They will invent gadgets that move, wiggle, and whirl to delight their Kindergarten ‘buddies’ who then get to do some creating themselves.” When the fifth graders and teacher Brian Van Gorder arrived in the K classroom they met one-on-one with their buddies, both members of each buddy pair were clearly excited to try out the gadgets. He explained that the students met with their buddies several times, then designed a gadget based on “what their kindergarten buddy would like most”, and tried to build that. The project taught his students about problem solving, perseverance, and trial and error. Many of the robot gadgets did not work for the students on the first try, but they used creative solutions to create their final gadgets.
