Investigated a big hullaballoo in the garden this morning, centred on the variegated grevillea where a pair of brown honeyeaters have been raising two chicks in a delicately-constructed cup nest. They were harassing a pair of whip birds whod innocently strayed into the nursery tree. Honeyeaters and whipbirds both cursed each other loudly and non-stop - but for different reasons. Finally, after the whipbirds moved, on I noticed an ungainly little bird in a tiny tree next to the nursery tree. Two brown honeyeaters were flying from tree to tree checking on it. When I grabbed the binoculars I could see this wobbly little thing had very short, stubby tailfeathers. And then it clicked ... the two nestlings had just left the nest and were testing their wings with the anxious parent birds patrolling to keep them safe. Such a wonderful thing to be able to watch closely.
