Investing in farm, single-family home REITs They’re enticing, but these new REIT classes are uncharted territory.Buying a farm isn’t cheap. But the average investor with an appetite to own crop-yielding real estate has another avenue these days: investing in a farmland REIT. Last year, Gladstone Land Corp. LAND +2.70% became the first publicly traded farmland REIT; it owns farmland in Arizona, California, Florida, Oregon and Michigan. Another, Farmland Partners, filed for an initial public offering in January. Other new publicly traded REITs attracting attention are those that buy and rehab single-family homes and lease them out. They include American Residential Properties ARPI +0.06% , American Homes 4 Rent AMH +0.67% and Silver Bay Realty Trust Corp. SBY -0.14% . These companies could be compelling to those seeking to profit from the wave of foreclosures, as well as from families who can’t qualify for a mortgage to buy a home.
