Investments in Malaysia reached a new record last year against swirling external headwinds, and brought with them a large pool of high-skill job opportunities. Close to 200,000 jobs will be created when these projects, from the total RM216.5bn investments, are realised over the next two to three years. As the vital bridge between demand and supply touches points, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) gets to know first-hand what the investor - be it domestic or foreign - is seeking, especially in the manufacturing sector. Its CEO Datuk Azman Mahmud said while the situation is not acute, talent in Malaysia faces two challenges - inability to meet the requirements of the 5 investors or not meeting the specifications required for new and upgraded operations. For Mida, we have a talent management division to reduce the gaps between the supply and demand, and skill sets required in the short term (three years). This period gives the opportunity for the supply side to prepare the talent, he said. (BT)
