Invitation to upcoming events at the Washington State Capitol Museum (211 21st Avenue SW, Olympia, WA 98501): Please join us Monday, June 24 at 12 Noon in the museum’s Coach House as we kick off the summer with a special program highlighting the 2013 Paddle to Quinault, Canoe Journey in early August. Captain Les Bolton of the replica brig the Lady Washington and Executive Director of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority will present the plans for his organization’s involvement with northwest tribes, their unique partnership with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the Quinault Indian Nation, to participate and support the 2013 Paddle to Quinault and their plans for an exciting legacy project. A planned recreation of the first encounter in 1788 between the explorer Robert Gray of the Lady Washington and the coastal people of the northwest is part of the 2013 Canoe Journey Celebration. Also this summer – “Welcome to Washington,” a musical walk through Washington State’s geography and history in song, presented by Mary Water. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 6 PM Public Program 7 PM Performance. $2 suggested donation Musical topics include local pioneers, villains, heroes, scientists, Pacific Chorus Frogs and roller-derby bouts. Guitarist and singer and songwriter Mary will have her new album available for purchase after the program. Refreshments served. Ice Cream! “A World of Sweets in Washington State.” Thursday, July 11 at 6 PM in the Coach House, followed by ice cream sundaes for everyone. $2 suggested donation From bienenstich to bánh xu xê, marzipan to mochi, the diverse range of sweets we enjoy across Washington state reveals much about our shared history and culture. Each of these sweets tells a story: Ingredients illustrate trade routes and trends, recipes record migration patterns and special forms point to special occasions. This mouth-watering and thought-provoking talk will invite us to savor the ways in which sweets show how individuals and communities celebrate, adapt and interact. Presented by Julia Harrison, a trained anthropologist and avid traveler for whom all roads lead to sweets. 2013 Movies at the Mansion The annual classic film series on the front lawn of the historic Lord Mansion.
