Iokwe Aolep, We need to put into action the words from the brief - TopicsExpress

Iokwe Aolep, We need to put into action the words from the brief speech I made at the recent CMI graduation ceremony about transforming this college into a truly Marshallese institution, providing authoritative and credible leadership in thinking and teaching in Marshallese, Marshallese language guidance, translation and instruction, preserving and teaching Marshallese history and culture and related research and research related to sustaining the Marshall Islands as a home for the people of these islands. The construction of the 2nd half Learning Center to house all of this is a vital and necessary step. Equally vital is the creation of the organizational infrastructure that establishes, develops and maintains the Center as the focal point and spiritual core of the truly Marshallese institution of higher education under the leadership of a visionary, energetic, charismatic Marshallese who can speak with authority on matters of vital and increasing importance to the RMI. This would also be a great way to groom and mentor the next President of the College, a Marshallese President of CMI. In the Tan Proposal a viable organizational model is offered. Surely, the 2nd half of the Learning Center and Marshallese Studies are more than worthy of consideration for support and for funding, regardless of the source or the donor. The impact of climate change on the future of the islands and the people who lived on these islands for millennia means we need to consider that legacy as future teachers and future students are trained and educated – so the language, traditions, customs are living and breathing no matter what the future brings. Bringing the Customary Law Commission to the national college is a big step in this direction, but it is only one step of many that still needs to be made to secure this legacy. Kommol
