Iowa City named one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live --------------------------------------- Looking for a great place to live? Iowa Citians are already there, according to Livability, which announced recently that Iowa City has been named to its list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live -- coming in at #10. The #1 spot went to Madison, Wisc. Its really no surprise that we made the list two years in a row, said City Manager Tom Markus. Iowa City is a great place to live because of the unique nature of our community and the people who call Iowa City home. The Citys overall culture, combined with so many opportunities for education, employment, entertainment and entrepreneurship, make this a place that people are drawn to, and a place they want to stay long-term. Iowa City was singled out for its top 10 spot for a number of reasons, including the health care system and number of available doctors, City infrastructure and a high per capita support of the local transit system, UNESCO City of Literature status, the University of Iowa, the Writers Workshop, and support of the Hawkeyes. The City was also recognized for its ability to face natural disasters such as floods and tornados head-on, recover, rebuild, and in the process, get even better. Following Madison in the Top 10 were Rochester, Minn.; Arlington, Va.; Boulder, Colo.; Palo Alto, Calif.; Berkeley, Calif.; Santa Clara, Calif.; Missoula, Mont.; and Boise, Idaho. Other cities in Iowa that made the top 100 include Ames (#30), West Des Moines (#57), Cedar Rapids (#65) and Des Moines (#82). This is Livabilitys second annual report of the Top 100 Best Places to Live. Iowa City made the list last year, too, although in 2015 it moved up 37 places from its #47 spot last year. To compile its best-city list, Livabilitys team conducts months of research into the factors that most influence the livability of Americas small to mid-sized cities. More than 2,000 cities with populations between 20,000 and 350,000 were evaluated in eight categories for this years rankings, including economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital, education and health care. Issues related to livability, such as walkability and transportation, urban planning and sustainability, were also explored. Respondents were asked about factors that make their communities better places to live, as well as the factors they would consider if they were moving to another city .
