University of Limerick Unlocking The Secrets Of Success - How To Produce Award-Winning Graduates ULs award-winning students: Ava Mahoney, Triona O’Sullivan, Ross Mullane, Eoin Cahill. Unlocking the secrets of success - how to produce award-winning graduates Wednesday, 16th July 2014 Our students are the very heart of UL. Their energy and passion inspires us, their desire for learning motivates us and their successes are celebrated by the entire campus community. Our students and graduates consistently win more than their fair share of regional, national and international competitions and awards. And the graduate employment rate of UL graduates, one year after graduation, is 13% higher than the average for the other 6 universities combined. So how do we do it? 1. Establish the largest Cooperative Education placement programme in Ireland. UL’s Cooperative Education Programme is the largest work placement programme in Ireland and one of the largest in Europe. Over 1,600 placements are secured annually, with 20% of students completing their placements within UL’s network of international employers across 25 countries. Our students actively engage with the world of work and interact with employers from their first year onwards and this directly impacts their attitude to work, skill development and future employability. 2. Create an outstanding and distinctive learning environment. Our curriculum and learning environments are actively designed to produce individuals who are knowledgeable, proactive, creative, responsible, collaborative, and articulate graduates and citizens. Flexible program structures allow students to complete modules outside their area of study and volunteers in the President’s Volunteer Programme contribute more than 10,000 hours of skilled labour to community projects. 3. Graduates and employers reap the rewards. This year UL students and graduates have claimed titles such as ‘Graduate Employee of the Year’, ‘Journalist of the Year’, ‘Student Marketer of the Year’, ‘Best Society Individual in Ireland’ and have won national and international competitions such as ‘GradIreland National Student Challenge’, ‘The Advocate National Law Challenge’, ‘The International Alltech Young Scientist Competition’ and the ‘National Robocode Programming Challenge’. UL’s success, and the success of our graduates, is not an accident; it is the result of focused planning and the dedication of many faculty and staff working together to ensure UL graduates have the best preparation for their future lives. Our graduates are important to us; we owe them every opportunity to succeed.
