Is Basis for everyone? No, of course not. But lets be realistic about the impact of Basis and similar Charters. So long as Basis, Great Hearts and other charters are perceived to offer the best option for over-achieving students, they will continue to capture a greater percentage of the top performing students in the community. Brain Drain is a reality - not just a rumor. What is the impact on our public schools? As we lose a disproportionate share of the brightest and highest achieving students, we average down the performance of the remaining enrollment. Not all of the brightest kids in Scottsdale leave SUSD. But the playing field for the relative market share is tilting away from us. As we lose those kids, we also lose the ability to sustain larger Gifted or Honors programs. We become the school of choice for those who are satisfied with mediocre levels of performance and for parents with Special Ed kids. The flow of the best and the brightest out of SUSD increases and accelerates and then can never be reversed. That sounds very harsh - it is not meant to be harsh. It is simply the power of a shifting marketplace. Does it have to be this way? Can SUSD not out-perform Charters at the highest level? OR is SUSD destined for mediocrity? We challenge SUSD to regain the competitive edge in our market for the best and brightest of students. Achieving that goal requires sharp refocus of the Districts assets and budget. We cannot out perform BASIS when we allocate such enormous blocks of our budget to operating half empty schools. Or massive bus fleets. Or ever-growing District level staffing. Our current Superintendent steadfastly insists that his plan and his budget is right for our community. He is correct only if we believe that the role of SUSD is to be the leader in education only for students performing at the bottom 50%. And if we accept his vision for SUSD, then those of us who want our kids to have an opportunity to excel will continue to put our kids on the waiting lists for these Charters.
