Is Exercise as Good as Medications at Preventing Migraines? Swedish researchers claim that exercise might be just as good as medications when used to prevent migraines. Their study involved 91 migraine patients, of which a third were asked to exercise for 40 minutes three times a week, another third was asked to perform relaxation exercises, and the final third was given the medication topiramate. The number of migraines fell in all three groups with no difference in the preventative effect between the three treatments. Researcher Dr. Emma Varkey writes, Our conclusion is that exercise can act as an alternative to relaxations and topiramate when it comes to preventing migraines, and is particularly appropriate for patients who are unwilling or unable to take preventative medicines.
