Is Facebook a Blight on our communities? Today, the youth are becoming more and more attached to their technology. Relationships are being built online, Keystrokes and status updates are now the keys to our heart and Sites like Facebook are making this possible as well as providing a way of communication. Although it seems to be slowly becoming the only way of communication with today’s youth, thus making one on one interaction less frequent and having a negative effect on the social abilities of the youth. Social Media sites like Facebook make a portable, personal bubble possible. These bubbles are growing around so many people that no one realizes social media creates a distraction from real life experiences. I find myself at odds with this way of life and against the evil that is technology but there are ways that is helps. It helps many people by allowing them to stay in touch with close friends, Friends that may have moved away or even old friends that you once cared about. In my own life, I have moved on from all my friends and had still wanted to stay in touch with them, it can also be as easy to call them up and ask if they would like to do something, in person. Something as simple as staying in touch can easily be done in person or over technology. Its True, Some people have a lot of trouble making friends at all. Facebook provides a way to meet new people through friends and chats. Relationships that are built online can be quite eclectic, But I did find one study suggesting that “online relationships simply take longer to develop than those face-to-face and eventually can become as rich” (Coget and Yutaka). A socially awkward person can become more open online through social media and if you haven’t had a chance to meet others in real life then that is all you know. With that said, talking to people on Facebook can give you confidence and an ego boost, but it will also tear a person down. Knowing that real friends are hard to come by and resorting to making them online will make you feel one of two ways, either really good or worthless. I believe that Facebook changes the rules of communication in life. Interaction is facilitated within the community and allows each person to feel like part of the whole social experience. For those who say that Facebook cuts down on face-to-face communication between People. I could then argue that Facebook gave me something I had been lacking all these years, a direct conduit to my People from having moved around so much, even when we were not together personally. I enjoyed this feeling of being united with my\tribe. My advice is to Keep your friends, don’t be sucked into the internet and most importantly, never allow social networking into your heart, because it is lame.
