Is India a Mango Republic? Transparency International’s - TopicsExpress

Is India a Mango Republic? Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) ranks India 94th out of a total of 176 countries in 2012. This dismal performance is nothing new to India, which was ranked at the 95th position last year. India’s performance has been deteriorating fast. Here are the ratings for India for the past few years on the CPI index. 94th out of 176 countries in 2012 95th out of 183 countries in 2011 87th out of 178 countries in 2010 84th out of 180 countries in 2009 80th out of 180 countries in 2008 72nd out of 180 countries in 2007 India is the largest democracy in the world. India secured its independence from Great Britain in 1947 and became a republic on 26th of January 1950. India has a massive population of more than 1.1 billion people living in an area about 1/3 the size of the United States. India’s corruption problems are also massive encompassing every aspect of life, where you cannot get by without having to bribe someone who in turn takes a bribe from someone else. In shocking humiliation, just yesterday the International Olympics Committee suspended India’s membership from the global sports body. A big shame for a country that wants to be a global power. If that is not enough, the Indian Olympic Committee responded by electing as its President a guy called “Lalit Bhanot” who is being prosecuted for corruption. Bhanot is a crony of another politician “Suresh Kalmadi” who himself is being prosecuted for corruption when he headed the “Commonwealth Games” recently held in India. Countries in South and Central America have been derided for the longest by the moniker “Banana Republics” where corruption masquerades in various forms of government. Well, you are known by the company you keep. Sixty-five years later, India still remains mired in democracy, corruption, poverty, and illiteracy. Is India just a Mango Republic? At least India can take solace in the fact that it ranks above countries such as Myanmar (Burma), Sudan, Afghanistan, Somalia and North Korea in the CPI index. Enough said! -Forest
