Is Instrumental Music An Issue? More than 30 years ago Guy N. Woods wrote an article stating that 50% of members of churches of Christ did not believe that instrumental music in worship was biblically wrong. Because of our lack of teaching on the subject, what percentage would say that today? Some time ago a person asked me what was going on in churches of Christ. My response was that the digression now influencing many congregations was very similar to the situation that led up to the division between the Christian churches and the churches of Christ. In that division, which was recognized in the first census of the 1900’s, the Christian church had claimed victory over the non-instrumental churches of Christ. They had successfully taken over the majority of the larger congregations and most of the schools supported by our brethren.. At that time, they claimed to have over 600,000 members and the a cappella churches numbered only 159,000. The Christian Church group has now split into two factions. The ultra-liberal Disciples of Christ/Christian Church and the more conservative instrumental Churches of Christ. Some of the latter’s congregation still use the name Christian Church The current apostasy is shaping up much like the previous one. It appears the digressives have firm control of most of the larger congregations in the brotherhood and have the majority of our schools of higher education firmly in their grip. The instrumental music question is one of the divisive issues confronting us again. One brother, a popular writer, has written a book in which he compares the instrumental music question to the issue of keeping the Confederate Flag. He suggests that the only reason we do not wish to change is because we are afraid of losing our identity. This brother has sorely missed the point. The real reason we are adamantly refusing to adopt instrumental music in worship is because we sincerely believe it is biblically wrong. We are not afraid of losing our identity, we are afraid of losing our souls. Throughout Bible history those who tampered with God’s design for worship were punished or destroyed. God has not changed in His desire that men honor His choice. We keep His commandments, not so we can condemn others, but to demonstrate our love for Him (John 14:15; 1 John 5:2, 3). My good brother Phil Sanders, the Minister at Concord Road Church of Christ was right when he wrote, “If the Lord had wanted us to use instruments, He surely would have told us. For hundreds of years early Christians understood that a cappella (in the form of the church; emphasis added) music was the will of God-a divine tradition (1 Cor. 11:2, 2 Thess. 23:15; 3:6). We are willing to follow that tradition, not because men observed it but because God delivered it. Amen!” Brotherly Love, Sellers Crain Timestamp:4/1/2003 2:34:06 AM Admin Use Only: Page Counter: 2620Photo GalleryProgramsContact UsAbout UsTo Our VisitorsMissionsYouthCalendar of EventsBirds Eye ViewHomeCampPeru 2002Youth GalleryYouth Council Retreat 02Youth Council Retreat 02Trick or Trunk 02Bison Dazes 02One Day Retreat 02BasketballMinistriesMid-South School of Biblical StudiesInteractive Bible Study CoursesAre You Really Sure Of Your Eternal Salvation? Are You Worshipping God In Spirit And In Truth?Whos on the NetOur Mission FieldsWorld MapUnited StatesAsiaSouth AmericaEuropeWorld Bible Schoolchildren of the worldMission CommitteePeru 2001Peru 2002
