Is It a Sin? Often the question is asked, “Is it a sin to ….? Sometimes it is asked in a sincere desire to do right and avoid doing wrong. Sometimes it is asked in order to justify actions that the conscience has already red flagged in our life. I hope these answers from scripture will help when confronted with such questions Does it violate the clear teaching of scripture? If so, then it is sin. God’s moral law still applies in this century as it did in the first. 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Is it just, in other words, is it right? If it is not, then it is sin. 1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. Does it go against any command that God has given? If scripture tells us we should and we do not, it is sin. Sometimes it is referred to as sins of omission. James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. Is it a product of my own lusts, meaning longings which are in themselves forbidden by scripture? James 1:14-15 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (15) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. We are to walk in the light we have. If the caution light our conscience is blinking red or yellow, we should take heed. To act in a way that violates our conscience is to sin. Further light from the scriptures may clear up an issue, but until then one should be cautious. If you are not sure, don’t! Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
