Is Overt Divinity a Sign of Insanity? People who have had near death experiences have a complete change in their outlook on life thereafter. They become spiritual and as Shermer the editor of “Skeptic” magazine states that it is like someone who’s had a mind –altering experience, say like a hallucination. Shermer goes on to add that phenomenon such as these along with seeing visions and hearing voices are so powerful that throughout history seekers of divinity have sought to induce them. Accepting them as reality can be dangerous for both the individual and larger society. Overt divinity or fundamentalism is a form mental illness. They are the foundations of paranormal beliefs so powerful that not only life can be changed but even entire religions are founded on the basis of hallucinations which were later construed as divine in origin. These become radicalized to cult ideology and some of these lurking beliefs in society end up doing damage to society in the long run. Neurologist Kathleen Taylor says that religious fundamentalists may one day be treated in the same way as mental illness. Strong dogmatic beliefs could be eradicated using techniques for behavior modification. Many psychologists wonder if this can be a sign or warning of mental disturbance. –Vinay-
