Is Ukraine A Third World Country ? What Is Going On There ? By : Omar Abu Arqoub Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe, its independence was attained in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the country is richly endowed in natural resources like coal, iron, oil, gas, salt and brimstone, Its population in 2014 is 45 million, but there is stalling efforts at economic reform, privatization, and civic liberties, stability, because of the dominance of Soviet Union. (Ukraine) there is two way to classify Ukraine in the second or third world, firstly, based on social, political, and economic divisions, most of countries that was communist or countries that remained non-aligned with NATO, and did not belong to capitalism system or USA and European countries. classified in the second world countries, during the Cold War. (Tomlinson, (2003)) The third world countries have characteristics like poor, non-industrialized, poorly technology development, slow growth, high unemployment, high level of illiteracy, and law level of democracy and stability and so on, The Third World was normally seen to include many countries with colonial pasts. but Ukraine now do not have all this characteristics, has instability, not Prosperous economically, law level of democracy and violence, but it is puzzling to consider it in the third word. (Tomlinson, (2003)) According to the world system theory, states that global economic expansion takes place from a relatively small group of core-zone nation-states out to two other zones of nation-states, Core nations define the relations between the core and the semi periphery as well as the core and the periphery. The core provides technology, software, capital, knowledge, finished goods, and services to the other zones, which function as consumers and markets. The semi periphery and engage the relationship with core nations primarily through providing low-cost labor, raw materials, mass markets, or low-cost venues for feature films, and has Core like activities and Peripheral-like activities, because that Ukraine is semi periphery country, and considered in the second world. (McPhail, 2006) What Is Going On In Ukraine ? Ukraine finds itself in a position of weak, after its dependence to Soviet Union, and want to Get rid of Russia dominance, but the Internal disagreement over economic policy toward the European Union, A pro-European movement ended up toppling the government, and deposed President fled the country on Feb. 22. (EPPINGER, 2014) Less than a week later, the Russian Federation invaded southern Ukraine and annexed Crimea, The Ukrainian prime minister, has accused Russia of wanting to start a third world war by occupying Ukraine militarily and politically, and said that Attempts at military conflict in Ukraine will lead to a military conflict in Europe. (EPPINGER, 2014) Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear arsenal, on the condition that the United States and others guarantee Ukraines territorial integrity, prime minister said: If the United States and European Union ready to compel Russia to fulfill its obligations, then we will maintain the peace, stability and international security system that Russia wants to destroy. (Russia wants to start third world war, says Ukraine, 2014) After the violence that was happened in Ukraine against the protesters and suppressing them, the region still tensions, and Russia ready to start the war the still its dominance on Ukraine, the west and USA wants to earn it, and to be joint in Europe Union to weak the power of Russia. In conclusion, seems the cold war did not finished, and because of what I mentioned above we can not consider Ukraine from the first world, some people consider it in the second world, and after the last crisis, with the violence, less democracy, and political dependence, the most people consider it from the third world.
