Is a new day dawning in Europe? Election day today in Greece, and the SYRIZA party is poised to win a majority. We urgently need one united Europe governed in the interests of all of its peoples, and an end to governments by and for the one percent. The European Central Bank has just announced a trillion Euros worth of ‘quantitative easing’, to begin on March 15th at a rate of fifty billion Euros a month. QE in the USA, the UK and Japan has had the proven effect of inflating asset prices (stocks, bonds and houses) while depressing wages; and it has done nothing to create new jobs. Think: who owns financial assets? No wonder, as UNESCO has been pointing out in Davos, that global inequality has skyrocketed since 2008, exactly when western central banks began ‘fixing’ our economies with QE. On present trends, by next year the one per cent will own half of global wealth.
