Is a well cushioned trail running shoe the best way to survive a 100 miler on packed gravel, limestone and mixed terrain (i.e. South Downs Way 100)? Im a tall guy who (mostly) adopts a mid foot running style but a little heavy footed and a back of the pack runner just aiming to finish my first 100. In recent 20 mile training runs my feet have felt a little battered afterwards (I run in Cascadias at the moment) and Im concerned what theyll be like over 5 times that distance. Is a lighter shoe better as Ill save energy early on? Or is the extra weight of a well cushioned shoe a good bet, using more energy early in the race but protecting my feet when I slow down (I anticipate a lot) in the later stages? Opinions greatly received. Im not specifically looking for shoe recommendations but your experiences with trail shoes over similar courses.
