Is dark skin ugly? The reason I ask is that skin bleaching is a very common practice by many black people and people of colour in different parts of the world. As much as you may hear I am black and Im proud, there is an engrained message for many black people that dark skin is not beautiful. Hundreds of years of slavery and colonisation has left a deep imprint on black people and our identity. Skin Bleaching or Skin Toning as it has now been rebranded as, is a multi billion dollar industry. Many do not see it as a big deal to bleach/tone their skin, they feel that to have lighter skin makes them more beautiful and handsome. Many even trivialise it and see it as no different than wearing make up. They see it as no big deal. However if dark skin was considered beautiful, would so many people feel the need to whiten, lighten, bleach or tone their skin? So I ask again, is dark skin ugly? Lets hear your thoughts.
