Is it Tax or tithe? The Church is a Nation Series Let us imagine that you were Moses - Yes, You! You’ve been given this awesome task of setting up a unique nation. The nation you’ve been asked to set up recognizes God as their king which is totally contrary to the nations around them and quite different to your experience in the palace/government of Egypt. You’ve worked on several governance policies for the nation. You’ve also created a unique arm of government from a tribe in the nation of Israel - the tribe of levi. (Please do well to look at our piece on the immigration policy of Moses). Please remember that all your work is from the perspective of the unseen king and your policies should reflect the unique language and proviso associated with a monarchy. It should carry terms - the blessing to reflects the king’s approval and endorsement. Now you have to develop the economic road map of the nation and had worked on a few trade policies. You have these army of civil servants (levities) that should serve both the interest of the king and that of the people. You have to generate a revenue that should cater for them, and something more progressive to what the nations around you have because the nation you are setting should be the envy of all nations. Question: How would you generation revenue to drive the activities of governance? Answer: The Tithe is Tax - Moses worked on what I would refer to as the most forward thinking tax policy for his era. It was to progressive that it focused on the core needs of government and accommodated issues like surplus.
