Is it a piece of furniture? A bookcase? A piano? How about a combination of all of these? The NMMs very tall, upright grand piano by Clementi & Co. of London was made about 1818. Built to resemble a 19th-century secretary (writing desk), the pianos mahogany case features two cloth-covered doors that enclose the soundboard, strings, and two bookshelves. The keyboard (with a compass of 6 octaves) is located beneath a roll-top-desk-style cover. Two pedals control the dampers and una corda.
