Is it bad to talk about short term (e.g.1-2 decades) trends in climate data? Thats what my friend Rami tried to explain to me some time ago. I didnt quite understand because l hadnt come across the Global warming has stopped campaign by a group lobbying against political action on climate change, who tried to use a specific set of data from a 16-years observation period to distract from the bigger picture. (I think the lobbyists concentrated their efforts on countries where the mainstream media would not call their bluff right away, and part of the population already holds opinions that are consistent with this pseudo-argument and will accept it without much scrutiny.) The video explains very well why that argument is not good: not just because the observation period that they chose to focus on is too short, but looking at the complete picture (as opposed to a limited focus on average annual ground temperatures during those 16 years) measurements during that period can even increase our confidence that the scientific consensus on climate change is right.
