Is it okay for parents to bend the rules a little? Most parents have made exceptions to their rules at home for different reasons based on circumstances. What can parents do to prevent the child from getting the wrong message when the house rules are excused? The parents need to be very honest with the child and explain that this is an exception based on the reason. Also, the reason should be valid: meaning, it should be reasonable and would have potentially affected the entire family. Also, have a follow up discussion if the child is able, focusing on why the schedule was altered, and if possible what can be done in the future to prevent altering the house rules. Sometime emergencies occur and changes have to be implemented. Honesty and consistency are very important.
