Is the citys dike system high and strong enough to protect the - TopicsExpress

Is the citys dike system high and strong enough to protect the northern section of Rosser Ward from a major flood? The area was evacuated in 2011 and residents received pre-evacuation notices this summer. The new dikes held in 2011 and the even beefier system held this summer. But concerns remain. There is a petition circulating about the level of the dike. Its completely understandable that residents of the area known as The Flats are not only worried about having to be evacuated again — the city is already bracing for another very high Assiniboine River next spring — but the ongoing toll on their property values is also a serious burden. Im told there will be an update on the dike system presented to city council at the Oct. 6 meeting. Since that will be an agenda item, residents would be able to speak to the matter during the Public Question Period. While Im hearing concerns about the dike and drainage in general at the doorstep, it certainly wouldnt hurt for people to show up and tell council how they feel in person. The Question Period has been a generally unused addition to the meeting agenda, implemented by the current council early in its mandate. This could be an opportune time to utilize it.
