Is there quick sustainable fix to Dumsor? No. Both John Mahama and the NPP aim at 5000MW national capacity. He[Nana Addo] said the energy crisis can be fixed and “we[NPP] intend to fix it with a [long-term sustainable] integrated energy plan that will start yielding results, if given the opportunity to win power to deliver power.” Nana Addo Said this, December, 2014. We are in January, 2015. Even in 2012 campaign, he envision to deal with the energy crisis with long-term investment, in span of 4yrs. And a decade for reliable infrastructure for transformation, i.e industrialization of the economy. So one can infer that, even come 2016, the ultimate aim of reliable, stable, affordable energy(electricity) supply, would not be a quick fix for any Party in power, but a long-term solution or measures. And that is exactly what Johm Mahama /NDC is already focused on. The NDC has hugely invested in local gas production at Atuabo to power VRA Abuazi thermal plant. That is adding up the quantum of gas we obtain from Nigeria. We will have our own gas to augment supply from Nigeria. All the NPP uncompleted generation plants handed to the NDC, that required heavy capital injection to completion, had been completed with fresh found money. One is the Bui Dam and the rest are thermal plants. There are plans and measures to ensure effective debt collection and prompt payment of electricity bills: Various power distributors are installing prepaid metres to reduce consumer indebtedness to ECG/NED and for that matter VRA. There are plans for installations of solar panels and additional generation plants to meet the 5000MW national capacity. And mind you, VRA has never stopped buying crude to power its thermal plants. Perhaps, it cannot sustain or afford to run the optimum generation capacity of each plant at all times. Gas is cheaper than crude, if the price of of crude is on a record low, optimum affordability or the financial capacity of VRA matters. VRA/ECG/NED as companies is essentially, not in business. They are not making profits, even not easy to recoup their operational cost/invesment. JM is on enhancing effective and efficient management of ECG and staff. A full ministry is in place now to focus on that. JM recently was in Germany to seek assistance to better the energy. Im optimistic that, by 2016, Ghanaians would get to see major improvement in electricity supply situation. JM and NDC are not insensitive, at all.
