Is there such a thing as good food and bad food? A local food bank says no to Kraft Dinner and hot dogs in favor of good, nutritious food | CTV Ottawa News - bit.ly/1txWZE8 This story strikes a nerve with me. I previously studied and worked in the field of social work. I have spent many, many hours in food banks and soup kitchens. I have seen first hand the nutrition deficit served up on those tables (typically due to lack of resources). I have talked and cried with their patrons, many of whom find themselves in need of such services because of chronic illness - most of which are inflammatory, autoimmune, or mental health related. In light of the mounting evidence that shows the role of nutrition in putting such symptoms into remission, I have to say that this project makes a whole lot of sense to me. Further, much of the food donated is expired, stale, or half rotten produce. Many of the folks with these health issues are sensitive to mould, yeast, histamine, or gluten (though most undiagnosed), so how much do you think it helps their recovery to continue to eat a diet that is overwhelmingly comprised of such things? I understand that this project has ruffled some feathers, but what theyre doing makes sense. They are teaching and equipping people to reclaim their health (yes cooking lessons, recipes, and even kitchen tools are included in the resources they distribute). Other mainstream Food Banks will continue to exist and accept your donations of Kraft dinner and hot dogs if thats what you connect with, however, I am exceedingly grateful to see other options being developed for those for whom health may otherwise be entirely unattainable. Its time to put an end to the poverty-illness cycle. Is there a program like this in your area?
