Du Toit has laid a medical negligence complaint to expose what he calls “abuse” at the hospital. His 64-year-old father, Daniel du Toit, spent over a month at the facility and reportedly developed a massive bedsore. His mother, who was also treated at the hospital, also developed a bedsore. Du Toit claims nursing staff have been heartless and uncaring. “Medical staff can’t treat people like this, they are human beings. The nurses must look after people.” Western Cape health officials have been hesitant to comment while an investigation into the matter is underway. While Du Toit is anxious about his parents’ deteriorating health, he put on a brave face while feeding them in their respective wards. He reiterated his biggest concern is to ensure their bedsores heal as they can cause septicemia which could be fatal. Action on Elder Abuse South Africa says it’s receiving an increasing number of complaints about hospital patients developing severe bedsores. The organisation says nurses have to be more vigilant with elderly patients.
