Is this really a joking matter? A certain political candidate seems to love making what he considers to be amusing quips about LDS polygamy. This time he reminisces about his time at BYU and says it was back in the time when Joseph Smith had only one wife...Emma. Its sad that hes amused by the way in which the LDS church has hidden the details of Joseph Smiths polygamy from its membership. And before anyone rushes to say that everyone already knew, the fact is they didnt. We personally know people who sincerely believed that Emma was Joseph Smiths only consort. Even sadder is the pain endured by many of the women who were called plural wives in that era; not to mention those women and girls whose names were blackened for disclosing that they had been approached by Joseph Smith; and those in this era who have felt compelled to follow his dictates on polygamy that are still found in the Doctrine and Covenants--a book of LDS church scripture.
