Is tomato juice the next Gatorade? Beyond the heart health benefits that a diet rich in tomatoes can offer, a recent study points out tomato juice as an effective aid to muscle recovery. Study subjects who were given tomato juice before and after exercise showed less muscle damage biological markers while homocysteine and C-reactive protein (inflammatory compound) were also attenuated. No changes were observed in the control group, where the usual carbohydrate supplementation had been followed. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, vitamin C and other antioxidants that are important for muscle recovery. Food and Chemical Toxicology
