Is your dog wearing too much bling? Metal can interfere with a microchip scanners ability to detect a chip, so its something to consider before adding another metal tag to your dogs collar. At Goldzilla the past weekend, RAGOMs Lost Dog Rapid Response team (for which we also volunteer) offered free microchip scanning. For safety purposes, we left collars on while scanning unless we could not detect a chip. We found several dogs whose metal collars and tags interfered with the scanner, but the chip was detected when the collar was replaced by a nylon slip lead. Unfortunately, not everyone in shelters, law enforcement agencies, vets offices, etc. has been trained in best practices. Microchips could go undetected if a dogs collar is not removed. You can help ensure that your dogs microchip is found by eliminating all non-essential metal tags from his collar or replacing them with plastic tags. Or just be sure hes wearing a tag with his microchip number. But the best way to ensure that your missing dog gets home quickly is to ID him with your contact information--including your cell phone number. That way, he wont need to be scanned at all.
