Is your stress level ramping up? Make sure that you arent handling elevated anxiety by self-medicating with booze and sweets. This is a tough time of year, a very busy one, and one in which there are increasing numbers of vices tempting us:) Elevated stress hormones are often the result of low blood sugar: when blood sugar drops because you have waited too long to eat or had a little too much coffee, cortisol levels SPIKE. Elevated cortisol can bring feelings of anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty losing weight (it essentially tells your body to store calories as fat). Many of us reach for refined sugar and carbs to treat this feeling of stress and anxiety. Sweets will make you feel calmer as it raises your blood sugar and then drops it low again. Some people seek the feeling of relaxation that comes with this. Its ok to indulge! But make sure if you are hungry that you eat something with protein, and that you eat protein on a regular basis throughout the day. You will be hearing lots from me about how to manage your stress hormones in the next two months, but the best thing you can do to tolerate more stress, more booze, more coffee or more sweets is to make sure your FOUNDATION is sound. Eat regularly throughout the day. Get decent sleep (at LEAST six hours). Drink water. And enjoy a little Halloween candy:)
