Isa. 2:1-11; 1 Thess. 2:13-20; Luke 20:19-26 But isnt it all Gods? Jesus division of things into what belongs to Caesar and what belongs to God is intended to make us scratch our heads and ask where the line is between those two, rather than simply going yep, sacred and secular, Church and State. Oh, were firm believers in the separation of Church and State in a legal sense. But God still owns it all, even if the US government doesnt favor one religious tradition over another. My faith isnt supposed to go into hiding when Im at work. Or shopping. Or choosing reading material. Its supposed to inform and shape my politics, and how I treat my neighbor. How I date, and how I mate, and how I grumble at the kids about socks on the floor. If its not all Gods, whose is it? Mine? But He made me. Caesars? Ditto. But at the same time, its not about wearing a cross around my neck or repeating religious slogans all the time. Its about how my faith changes the way I do business. Changes the way I react to those who vex and annoy me, or handle my rights, or spend my free time. Am I beating swords into plowshares? Am I sowing righteousness and peace? What Jesus is saying to the scribes and priests is that theyve framed the question falsely. Theyve forgotten that Caesar too is part of Gods equation. In need of correction, and reproof, and limits, sure. But still a part of the divine plan. That the Egyptians were also His children, and that the Red Sea must surely have hurt the divine Heart a smidge. Hes telling them this is all sacred--the market and the marriage bed, the factory and the farm, the court room, the computer screen: its all the scene of Gods purposes being worked out in us. And that we cant simply put them into a box labeled secular and treat them as devoid of divine purpose, any more than we can carry coins in our pocket in the Temple but insist they have no theological meaning. Render to Caesar whats Caesars? Its all Gods. Even Caesars share.
