Isaac is a 15hh coloured cob who came to Shy Lowen as an uncontrollable bolting horse in April this year. He had injured his rider several times, on one occasion crashing through a wooden fence with her on board. Out of concern for her safety and his future, she desperately sought somewhere he could be rehabilitated and found a suitable home, or she would have to consider putting him to sleep. He arrived as a very bolshy, confident character, which all proved to be over-compensation for the very sensitive and nervous horse underneath. We began his groundwork from scratch, and he took part in our Intelligent Horsemanship demonstration day as well as an ongoing equine assisted therapy programme for military veterans. Isaac began his ridden work in July. He was initially extremely tense and spooky and bolted at every scare, reacting to even the slightest movement from his rider and/or anyone on the ground. However, he learned very quickly and after some desensitisation work was soon being ridden alongside cars and tractors and over tarpaulins and wooden boards. He is now completing simple dressage tests and jumping without incident. Better still, he is so much happier and more relaxed, able to control his impulse to flee when something spooks him and actually enjoying being ridden. He has been tested with other horses and his next challenge is to accept a new rider, as he has so far only learned to trust one. If this is successful, he will then be advertised for loan to the right home. We have now added some videos from Isaacs training diary to our youtube channel, beginning with his 4th ridden session and ending this week, with his first jumping training session. See the improvement in him for yourself!
