Isabella, the cute little Paso mare told Hailey that she was thinking of ways to disobey her commands to go straight through these water crossings because she didnt like them. We train our horses to go right down the middle, because letting them go up the side will eventually get your knee cap knocked off one of those unyielding trees that always grow around them. Also, she should go down the middle because her rider told her to go down the middle. So, we spent about ten minutes going back and forth over these creek crossings until Isabella yielded, mind and body. Riders who let their horses disregard even their most simple commands are training them to rebel. You know the old saying that pennies add up to dollars? Seemingly small infractions add up to dimes to quarters to dollars to emergency room visits. Rule 1: Carry through with your commands. Be a leader. The worst thing you can do to your horse is be too soft on discipline. Rule 2: Never ask your horse to do something that youre not sure you can make him do. Rule 3: Seek wisdom. Learn the right way to handle your horse. Set him up for success. His life in a good home or his fate on a truck to Mexico is in your hands. Truth. Bare and harsh.
