Isaiah 40:10-11 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Salvation, blessing and comfort are all associated with the coming of the Lord to his faithful people. He comes with power and authority like a mighty ruler, yet his presence is like that of a caring shepherd tending his sheep. This truth should fill us with faith, hope and prayerful longing for his nearness and special visitation, while we look for the day of his return and final redemption. God is described as one who picks up an individual lamb in order to protect it and carry it close to His heart. The sighs, ignorance, and feebleness of the little ones of His flock bring out His compassion. It is His responsibility as a faithful High Priest to consider the weak. He purchased them with His blood, and they are His property. He is responsible for each lamb, bound by a covenant not to lose one. Although God is all-powerful and the nations are regarded by Him as dust, he still cares for each of His own in a personal way. Sometimes He carries us by not permitting us to endure much trial. Or, we are carried by being filled with an unusual degree of love so that we have the ability to stand firm. Frequently, He carries us by giving is a very simple faith which takes the promise just as it stands. The simplicity of our faith gives us an unusual degree of confidence which carries us above the world. He carries the lambs in His bosom. Here is boundless affection, tender nearness, perfect safety and rest and sweetest comfort. Would He put us in His bosom if He did not love us deeply? Who can hurt us when we are carried in His bosom. May we become more fully aware of the infinite tenderness of Jesus! We must never think that God is so majestic that He ignores the needs and problems of the individual believer. Our Good Shepherd has quite a variety of sheep in His flock. Some are strong in the Lord, and others are weak in faith. He is impartial in His care for all His sheep, and the weakest lamb is as dear to Him as the most advanced of the flock. Lambs tend to lag behind, to wander, and to grow weary. But the Shepherd protects them from these dangerous habits with His arm of power. He finds newborn souls, like young lambs, ready to perish and He nourishes them until their life becomes vigorous. He find weak minds ready to faint and die, and He consoles them and renews their strength. He gathers all the little ones, for it is not the will of our heavenly Father that one of them should perish. What a quick eye He must have to see them all! What a tender heart to care for them all! What a far-reaching and strong arm to gather them all! In His lifetime on earth He was a great gatherer of the weak. Now that He dwells in heaven His loving heart yearns toward the meek and contrite, the timid and feeble, and the fearful and fainting here below. He gently gathered me to Himself, to His truth, to His blood, to His love and to His Church. Since my conversion, He has frequently restored me from my wanderings and once again folded me within the circle of His everlasting arms! The best part is that He does it all personally, not delegating the task of love, but condescending to rescue and preserve His most unworthy servant. How shall I love Him enough or serve Him worthily? Great Shepherd, I pray for a heart to love You more truly.
