Isibaya dominates 1st Royalty Soapie Awards Yahoo South Africa Celebrity . By Jared Orlin | Yahoo South Africa Celebrity – Sun, Mar 9, 2014 1:11 PM SAST.. Despite some teething problems (like e.tv withdrawing their soapies, a delayed broadcast and rumours of mismanagement), the first Annual Royalty Soapie Awards got off to a flying start this weekend. Taking place at Durban ICC, the country’s first soapie awards were spearheaded by soap star Winnie Modise (Generations’ Khethiwe), who excluded herself from nomination. Interestingly, Generations, which is the top-rated soapie in the country, didn’t win a single award in either the technical nor the acting categories – particularly surprising considering that the night’s biggest award of Outstanding Soapie is based on viewer votes. You’d think the country’s biggest soap opera would have it in the bag but it was Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya – which has just been extended into a full-length, five-day-a-week soap opera – that nabbed the most accolades. In an almost clean sweep, they took nine of the 19 awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress. M-Nets now-defunct soapie The Wild took home two awards as did Isidingo, while 7de Laan won three – both of the supporting acting categories and best newcomer. One of the night’s biggest surprises had to be Binneland, which took home Outstanding Female Villain for Marisa Drummond and Most Popular Soapie – surprising because of its lower viewership. Kudos to the organisers for giving veteran actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards the Lifetime Achievement Award. She’s been in the industry for over 30 years and has had lead roles in Egoli, Generations and Villa Rosa, where she currently plays Fran.
