Isis is a lovely 18 year old, mixed breed dog who came in to Animal Emergency with Gastric dilatation volvulus, more commonly known as Bloat. This is a life-threatening problem that occurs most commonly in deep-chested dogs whose stomachs become twisted. The signs of this condition are usually discomfort and a bloated appearance. The dog will often pace, have non- productive vomiting and the abdomen will become more enlarged. This is what Isis’s owner was seeing when she decided to bring her to our hospital. After a quick assessment, an X-ray was taken to confirm the diagnosis. The black area seen on the x-ray is the gas that becomes trapped and causes the bloating. At this point, the pressure caused by the gas needs to be relieved. Then the patient is headed for surgery to replace the stomach to it’s correct position. In Isis’s case, Dr. Burgess was able to do just that and we are happy to report Isis went home the next evening and is fully recovered.
